Abstract

This study examines a novel by Hermann Hesse entitled Demian which was written in 1919. This study is a descriptive qualitative research with documenttaion method. The focuses of this study are identifying the types of metaphorical expressions in the novel and interpreting the meanings implied in those metaphorical expressions. The first focus was analyzed by Lakoff and Johnson‟s (1980) theory named Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), where the theory is divided metaphor into three concepts, they are orientational metaphor, ontological metaphor, and structural metaphor. Orientational metaphor has a concept where upward or downward situations are illustrated by using spatial orientation (up-down, front-behind/back, on-off, deep- shallow, central-peripheral). Ontological metaphor has a concept where abstract things illustrated as doing or being concrete things. Morover, the ontological metaphor is divided again into two types, which are personification (abstract/inanimate things doing animate activities) and container metaphor (abstract/inanimate things tretaed as a container, where everything might go in or out of it). Structural metaphor has a concept where one concept (abstract) is structured into another concept (concrete). Morover, the second focus was analyzed by using an approach named formalism theory, where the theory is used to analyze the language in a written literary work. Afer analyzing the data, it found that there are three types of metaphor used in the novel; orientational metaphor, ontological metaphor, and structural metaphor in conveying the expressions about love, relationship, and journey of one of the novel‟s character named Emil Sinclair in the novel.
