Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the most important skills that must be mastered, the most common factor that becomes the obstacle in mastering vocabulary is limited number of words mastered. One of the most useful strategy to help is the mnemonic strategy. The purpose of this research was (1) to find out, what are the mnemonic strategies used in mastering vocabulary as seen in Akeelah and the bee movie? (2) to know how are the implications of mnemonic strategies to vocabulary as seen in Akeelah and the bee movie? This research applied the direct observation by watching and analyzing the movie. The data was analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. There are several kinds of mnemonic methods that used in the movie such as: peg word method, keyword method, the loci method, and physical response method. All of these method has a big implications to students’ vocabulary. The result of this research is that the mnemonic method in this movie can be implemented for students as a means to develop their vocabulary mastery.
