Abstract

This thesis is entitled “An analysis of the Poetical Devices of “The Soul Selects Her Own Society”: a poem by Emily Dickinson”. The purpose of the study is to analyze the Poetical Devices of the poem. The writer conducted this study by using descriptive qualitative method. In supporting this study, Emily Dickinson’s poem by Melani is use as the primary source of the data, which is The Soul Selects Her Own Society. The data needed to support the study were obtained by conducting library research. The analysis showed that Emily Dickinson choose one faith and religion as the theme of the poem. From the discussion, it is concluded that (1) the ABAB rhyme scheme. (2) The three stanzas are contains four lines. (3) The form; lyric poetry. (4) The alliteration; consonance and assonance. (5) Figurative languages; simile, metaphor, imagery, and personification. (6) The rhythm; iamb, trochee, dactyl and anapest.
