Abstract

This study is concerned with strategies in saving someone else’s face as a way to support and respect the people we talk to. Face is the desire to be supported and respected in a particular situation. The approval and respect will be determined in the way the speaker utters their statement. This research focuses on the use of politeness strategies by Deddy Corbuzier in The Corbuzier podcast. This study was aimed to identify and analyze what kinds of politeness strategies and which kind of politeness strategy that used dominantly. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. There were 68 utterances collected as the primary source data. The utterances were obtained from three Corbuzier podcast videos. The data were analyzed by using the theory politeness strategy from Brown and Levinson (1987) as the guidance. In addition, there are four types of politeness strategy: bald on- record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record politeness strategy. The result showed that Corbuzier performed 4 utterances (5.88%) using bald on- record strategy, 60 utterances (88.23%) positive politeness, 3 utterances (4.41%) negative politeness, and 1 utterance (1.47%) off-record strategy. From the results, positive politeness strategy was the most frequently used strategy by Corbuzier. The frequent use of positive politeness strategy showed that Corbuzier was aware of his guests’ positive faces.
