Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the types of deixis based on Levinson’s theory and pragmatically describe the reference meaning of deictic words in the selected songs of Folklore Album by Taylor Swift. It is utilized to describe the data from song lyrics that have been gathered based on the classification of deixis according to Levinson’s Theory. This research is a descriptive qualitative method. There are 207 out of 224 lines consisted of deictic words. The lines are obtained from four selected songs in the album due to the correlation among them to the basic concept of teenage love triangle. The result shows that the selected songs build context in the term of story which assists the reference meaning description due to the pragmatic context involved. From the results, all types of deixis based on Levinson are not distributed well. Certain types of deixis are unavailable in the selected songs. Person deixis is the most used deixis in the songs. The participants of communication affect the context of the song. The representation of character’s point of view provides additional information from deictic words. The concept that is made by songwriters proposes the same setting that interlink referent meaning due to the context. So, the study of deixis allows context to play a part on comprehending the content of song. Meanwhile, deixis also contributes to the aesthetic side of literary form. The use of deixis adds peculiar value on how songwriter portrays the story line besides of using literary devices.
