Abstract

The Age of Spin is the first comedy special Dave Chapelle has released in more than a decade. After abruptly leaving his sketch series Chappelle’s Show in 2005. This study focuses on the types and meanings of figurative language found in The Age of Spin Standup comedy specials and the functions of figurative language found in The Age of Spin Standup comedy specials by using Perrine’s theory. This study aims to identify and describe the types, meanings, and the function of figurative language in Dave Chapelle's age of spin. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method to describe and analyze the types and meanings of figurative language in this special. The result of this study is types of figurative language; From four three categories of figurative language, four data contain metaphor, twelve data of simile, two data of personification, and none of the apostrophes. Six data contain hyperbole, five data of understatement, four data of paradox, and ten data of irony. Then, there are fourteen data containing metonymy, nine data of symbol, five data in synecdoche, and three allegory data. Then, the figurative language's function is to afford imaginative pleasure, bring an additional, add emotional intensity, and finally, concrete the meaning in a brief compass or be another way to express a lot in a short amount of time. The researcher suggests that the reader analyze and compare figurative language using other theories.
