Abstract

This study is aimed at finding out the effect of using Direct Reading Thinking Activity in teaching reading comprehension. The population of the study is 350 students containing nine classes. The sample was selected by cluster random sampling and there were 78 students as the sample of this study, divided into two groups: 39 students belonged to experimental group and 39 students belonged to control group. The research procedures are pre test-treatment-post test. Pre test was given for both of experimental group and control group in order to know the basic ability of reading comprehension. Then, the treatment were given four for each group. The experimental group was treated by Direct Reading Thinking Activity, whereas the control group was treated by conventional method like translation method which usually used by the teacher. The data were analyzed statistically using t-test formula. The result of this study proved that the mean deviation scores for experimental group (19.334) was higher than mean deviation scores for control group (11.487). It is also supported by the t-test value (3.621) which was higher than t-table in two tails test at confidence level .05 (95%) was 1.99167 (3.621 > 1.99167 ) and at confidence level .01 (99%) was 2.64208 (3.621 > 2.64208) with the degree of freedom (df) 76. This can be interpreted that was significant difference of reading comprehension achievement during this study between experimental group and control group. Therefore, Direct Reading Thinking Activity is effective in teaching reading comprehension. Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.
