Abstract

STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES AND STRATEGIES IN DOING LISTENING SECTION ON TOEFL-LIKE TEST: A Case Study at Eight Semester Students of FKIP University of Mataram Advisor I Advisor II Dr. Arifuddin, M. Pd Ni Wayan Mira Susanti, S. Pd, MA Maulia Pujiana E1D111083 TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) is commonly used as graduation requirement in some faculties including in English Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Mataram University. However, it is not an easy task to achieve a minimum score of 500 to fulfill the graduation requirement because the students faced many problems in doing the test. Thus, they need to have their own strategy to overcome the problem because a test needs not only accuracy but also celerity due to strategy which assists them in time management. This descriptive qualitative study is aiming at finding the students’ difficulties they faced and strategy they used in doing Listening section on TOEFL test. Eleven senior students of English Department are examined by employing questionnaire and in-depth interview. The students’ responses are identified, classified, described and explained. The result defines that listening section is considerably not easy for them and the most complicated part of listening section is part C (lecture). The finding also indicates that concentration, key word, time, speed of the speaker, and focus as problems perceived by students. In order to overcome the problem, the students commonly used some suggested strategies: focus on the second speaker, glance the answer choices, concentrate on several key word, be familiar with questions type, anticipate the topic, look at and follow along with the answer, draw conclusion and try to not leave any answer blank even though by guessing. While their own strategies were: listen to the English song, practice TOEFL exercises in TOEFL book, take the seminar/workshop or TOEFL course, Go through the questions and guess what the topic was about, try to guess its meaning
