Abstract

This study aims to analyze the kinds of figurative language and contextual meaning in the short story Nobody Ever Dies written by Hemingway in 1939. Hemingway's literary works have characteristics that influence the kinds of figurative language used and the contextual meaning contained in it based on the conditions at that time on the story and do not use excessive language style as in usual literary work. However, his literary work still contain literary elements that are commonly used, which is figurative language. Because Hemingway's story has the personal background of a journalist who finally plunged into the realm of literature. Hemingway's writing style in literary work is natural, storytelling like telling an event and retelling the conversations of the characters in the story that contains figurative language. To find the result of this study, The researcher used formalism theory as theoretical framework, qualitative method by Creswel as a research design, documentating method to collecting the data, and then doing analysis by Utari’s stages. The results of the research shows that there are six similes, four metaphors, three personifications, five hyperboles, one imagery, and four synecdoches. From the results of the study, the figurative language used by Hemingway in this story is indeed not as much as in the stories and novels from other writers because the Hemingway's writing style is influenced by the personal background and social background of the author as the researcher will explain in the first chapter.
