Abstract

This study aims to identify the vocabulary mastery learning strategies used by outstanding students at the University of Mataram and to identify the factors that influence. There are 15 respondents and were chosen because they had evidence of achievement in English. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method by collecting data through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The questionnaire uses open and closed questions about English vocabulary learning strategies. The interview is un-guided interview, so that it can reduce student's nervousness to express ideas. The documentation is the evidence of its achievements in the form of a certificate of competitions. The results show that there are five learning strategies used by students, namely: determination strategies, social strategies, memory strategies, cognitive strategies, and metacognitive strategies to develop vocabulary mastery abilities of outstanding students. There are two factors that influence respondents' strategies, namely internal and external factors. Internal factors consist of interesting and talenting of the respondents. External factors consist of three, including family, teacher, and community factors.
