Abstract

“This research is a pragmatic approach study of speech acts analysis of a movie entitled "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey". This research aims to find out the speech acts performed by the main character in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Specifically, this research focuses on identifying what kinds of speech acts are used based on Austin’s theory and Searle’s classification of speech acts, analyzing the intended meaning used by the main character, and discovering the most dominant types of speech acts used by the main character in the movie. This research used the script of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as the source of data, and this research applied a qualitative descriptive method. Thus, the data were described in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The result of the research shows the 3 kinds of speech acts produced by the main character in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In this study, the researchers found 118 (one hundred and eighteen) utterances of speech that were performed by the main character in the movie. There are 23 (twenty three) utterances which are put into the locutionary acts, and 79 (seventy nine) utterances are put into the illocutionary acts, and the last is 16 (sixteen) utterances were put into the perlocutionary acts. Based on findings, the most dominant speech act used is the directives illocutionary acts, with a total number of 79 (seventy-nine) utterances. Moreover, utterances indicating speech acts by the main character have an intended meaning when the function of the pragmatic approach is applied, such as when the main character performs their directives illocutionary acts directly in several tones of voice and uses body language to emphasize their speech acts, which are performed via eye contact, facial expression, and gesture. Those nonverbal strategies have certain functions that are concerned with the speech act or message being sent by both speakers to the hearer.”
