Abstract

Paraphrasing is considered one of the key skills for academic writing. Most of the students of English Department still have difficulty in paraphrasing. Therefore, to broaden the understanding of students' abilities and problems in paraphrasing, this study investigates students' abilities in paraphrasing by using tests on English students and the researcher examines students' problems in paraphrasing using closed questionnaires which will be answered by fifth semester students English. The purpose of this research is to identify the ability and problems of English students in paraphrasing and to investigate the types of problems they face in paraphrasing. The participants of this study were fifth semester students consisting of 21 students from 210 students in seven classes, the researchers took students randomly and only took 10%, namely 3 students in each class. This research was conducted by applying quantitative research methods using tests and questionnaires as the data collection techniques used. The research findings revealed that the obstacles they encountered in paraphrasing were: Fear of mistakes, lack of confidence in one’s own abilities, lack of vocabulary, lack of understanding of grammar in paragraphs, lack of understanding of techniques in paraphrasing. In this study, the average ability of students in paraphrasing is categorizing as “Good” and shows that students who score “Very Good” in paraphrasing are 4% , and students who score “Fair” in paraphrasing are 26% . Furthermore, the results of the closed questionnaire showed that there were 5 student problems in paraphrasing a paragraph, and the researcher concluded that on average students had difficulty in paraphrasing due to a lack of vocabulary, this is in accordance with the questionnaire given to students.
