Abstract

This research aims: 1) to describe phonological difficulties faced by the fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at FKIP University of Mataram when they speak English. 2) to analyze the factors causing phonological difficulties faced by the fourth semester students of English Education Study Program at FKIP University of Mataram when they speak English. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The research participants were the fourth semester students of English Education Program who have language background of Javanese, Sasak and Bimanese. To collect the data the researcher applied some kinds of instruments: voice recording and closed-ended questionnaire. In analyzing the data, the researcher used data analysis by Miles & Huberman (1992: 16) model, namely: data reduction, data display, and data explanation. The result reveals that, there are some English sounds that found to be problem due to their absence in their language background. There are three English sounds found to be a problem encountered by Sasak students. The consonants are: /v/, /θ/ and /ð/. For Bimanese students, the researcher found that they have a problem with vowels sound in medial position of the word. So that, the vowels that to be a problem are /ɜ:/ and /i:/ sound. Javanese students, changed the sound /z/, /ʃ/, and /ӡ/ into /s/ sound. The factors that cause phonological difficulties in this study are internal, external and interlingual factors.
