Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the kinds of politeness strategies, to find out the dominant politeness strategy, and the sociological factors in the use of those strategies. The methodology used in this research is qualitative descriptive. To obtain the data, several talk shows or interviews were observed and chosen, then transcribed orthographically. Data Analysis included identifying the types of politeness strategy, classifying, explaining the factors influencing the use of the strategies based on the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987), and concluding the result of f study. The findings shows the politeness strategies were bald on record, positive politeness, and negative politeness. There were 58 utterances containing politeness strategies in the first interview with Bill Gates, then 36 utterances in the episode with the Dalai Lama and 66 utterances in the Nadya Hutagalung‟s interview. The researcher found no off record strategy in this study. The dominant strategy used in the interview is Positive Politeness.
