Abstract

The main objectives of this study was to find out the students’ ability in using transition signals. The study was conducted to the seventh semester students of English Department of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Mataram. This study applied descriptive qualitative method with 39 students were used as the samples. The data were collected using test and questionnaire. Having analyzed the data, the result shows that one student or 3% students were categorized as ‘excellent’, two students or 5% students were categorized as ‘good’, four students or 10% students were categorized as ‘fair’, two students or 5% students were categorized as ‘low’, and 30 students or 77% students who were categorized as ‘failed’ in using transition signals. Students experienced difficulties in using transition signals because they did not understand transition signals specifically. Some students were confused when they used several types of transition signals, some other students did not even know how to use transition signals based on their function. Another reason was that they did not have adequate knowledge of several words, which made them confused. It can be concluded that students ability in using transition signals categorized as ‘failed’.
