Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the figurative language used in the movie “Little Women” directing by Greta Gerwig." The figurative language is analyzed based on Perrine's theory which covers: simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, allegory, paradox, hyperbole, litotes, and irony. It aims to find out the kinds of figurative language and the meaning of figurative language as well as to reveal the intent and the purpose of the figurative meaning. Qualitative descriptive method is applied to analyze the data. The data instrument was taken from the movie which was published in 2019. The results of this study contained 29 figurative languages. There are 6 utterances that show similes, 2 show metaphors, 5 show personification, 5 show irony, 4 show symbols, 2 show hyperbola, 3 show litotes, 1 shows synecdoche, and 1 shows paradox. The dominant strategy used from the 12 kinds is a simile. Further, this research can give the contribution in developing the awareness of literature, especially on the use of figurative language in various sentences and context.
