Abstract

This study focused on the word form of language style used by William Shakespeare and the function the word form in the drama story of The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. In supporting this research, the writer used qualitative methods by applying Formalism theory. The results of this study are the writer found 5 language style, they are: a) Languages style based on the diction, i.e. archaic English word and modern English word. b) Language style based on the sentence structure, i.e. simple sentence, compound sentence, and complex sentence. c) Language style based on the figurative language, i.e. hyperbole, personification, and simile. d) Language style based on the rhetorical devices is rhetoric question. e) Language style based on the sound is rhyme. Besides that, the writer also found three functions of language style used by William Shakespeare, i.e. 1) The function of language style is to increase the audience‟s state. 2) To persuade the reader about the topic of the story in the drama. 3) To create certain mood of the reader or audience, such as happy, sad.
