Abstract

his study focuses on analyzing the violation of conversational maxims produced in Hitam Putih program as proposed by Grice in his cooperative principles. The subject of the study is one of the TV programs in Indonesia. In obtaining the data, the writer took two videos of Hitam Putih from You Tube. The episodes are Sopir taxi berbahasa Inggris and Kisah inspiratve penyandang cerebral palsy. The data were transcribed the dialogues and identified the utterances that violated the maxims. The data applied a descriptive approach. The steps taken were first, classifying the violation of maxims found in the data, then analyzing the pragmatic functions of the four maxims and their violation. The results show the violation of the maxim occurred in all maxims. The quantity maxim is the most frequent occurrence than the other three maxims. There are some pragmatic functions of violating maxims, i.e. to inform, to explain something, to create humor, to hide the truth, softener, be clear, and to praise. The study also recommends that the more comprehensive analysis of talkshow need to be done in the future to find the exact reason why violation occurs in communication.
