Abstract

The objectives of this research are: 1) to describe the translation strategy are used in the movie subtitle from English (SL) to Indonesian (TL) and; 2) to find out the most dominant translation strategy used in the movie subtitle. This study focuses on Gottlieb’s classification of translation strategy on movie subtitle, they are : Expansion, Paraphrase, Transfer, Imitation, Transcription, Dislocation, Condensation, Decimation, Deletion, Resignation. then the data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data were original English scripts or dialogues from the movie and Indonesian subtitle that was written by Pain Akatsuki in subscene. The documentation method was used to collect the data from the movie. The findings show that there are seven out of ten strategies applied by the subtitle writer of the Hunger Games movie, they were: Expansion (8.26%), Paraphrase (39.56%), Transfer (17.39%), Imitation (9.56%), condensation (13.91%), Decimation (1.30%), and Deletion (10.00%). This study found that Paraphrase is the most dominant strategy used in the subtitle of the movie of the Hunger Games.
