Abstract

his study was intended to find out whether alphabet games can improve students’ memory retention in the teaching English vocabulary. The populationin this study was 47 first gradestudents of SMAN 1 BatuLayaracademic year 2015/2016, while the sample of this study was using population sample because there were only two number of first grade. The students in class X-A was the experimental group and class X-B was as the control. This study used an experimental design where the purpose was to investigate the possible effect of teaching English using alphabet game on students’ memory retention of English vocabulary. This research focuses on passive vocabulary. A pretest was given to the experimental group and the control group before treatment, and a posttest which given two weeks after treatment. The pretest aimed to know initial abilities of students. The treatment for experimental group was teaching English using alphabet game while the control group taught using the conventional method that was lecture. The posttest was given two weeks after treatment to measure students’ memory. The data of both groups were analyzed using t-test. From the data analysis, it was found that t-test value was higher than t-table (2.656>2.042) at the 5% level of significance with df=32. This indicated that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis is (Ha) is accepted. It means that alphabet games can improve students’ memory retention in teachingvocabulary at SMAN 1 BatuLayar, Grade X Semester 1 Academic Year 2015/2016.
