Abstract

This study aims to find out the students’ ability in using To Be (is, am and are). The method of this study is mixed method. Population of the study is 322 students of second year of SMP Negeri 4 Mataram in academic year 2014/2015 which was taken using accidental technique. Data were collected through the multiple choice, cloze tests and interview. Result of the study shows that the second year students’ of SMP Negeri 4 Mataram have difficulties in using To Be (is, am and are). This is proven by the mean score of the students’ is 65,4. According to the criteria of minimum mastery of English is 75, it is concluded that 36.1% (13 students) are capable in using To Be and 63.89% (23 students) are incapable in using To Be (is, am and are). In other words, most of the students are incapable in using To Be (is, am and are). The difficulties in using To Be (is, am and are) are caused by the following things : The problems found was (1) students do not really like English language subject, (2) to-be is confusing (3) they have difficulties matching the subject-verb agreement (4) the materials for “to be” were not really emphasized and not really focused, (5) they did not really pay attention to the teachers’ explanation, (6) students easily feel bored in the classroom because the teaching method was too monotonous, (7) the lack of practice after being taught the materials and in real life conversation. .
