Abstract

This research is aimed to know the implementation of Scientific Approach in English Writing Class: a Case Study at Second Year Students of SMPN 21 Mataram Academic Year 2014/2015. This research is designed as case study using descriptive method. The sample of this research are 20 students of class VII B. The techneque of collecting data used are questionnaire, observation, and interview. In order to know how the scientific approach was implemented in English writing class and interview the English teacher. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that 90 % the students responded that they were excited in learning using scientific approach, 80% the students responded that they were motivated and challenged to write simple sentence and 90% the students responded that they were able to write their own text. There was 30 % students’ response were not motivated and not able to write a simple text and there were some learning activities which were not applied by the teacher during teaching learning process. Firstly; the English teacher did not present the object in real media. On inquiry, teachers did not raise the students speaking skills, ask question, and give answers logically and systematically. Secondly, teacher did not guide the students in the experimenting stage. The last, teacher did not give feedback and appraisal to the students’ experimental results and their associating in communicating stage. The teachers’ and students’ perceptions towards the implementation of a Scientific Approach in Writing Class were scientific approach is not suitable to teach language lessons because this approach was adopted from science. Scientific approach is more suitable for teaching biology, physics, and chemistry. Surprisingly, the result of this research showed that Scientific Approach is suitable to be implementied in English Writing Class.
