Abstract

Abstract: This thesis aims to describe the images and messages conveyed by the image in the English textbook. These all are presented by following the theory of image established by Wright (1989). The data source of this study is Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XII Published by Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia 2018. Document analysis is used to collect the data of this study. The results of the data analysis indicate that the signs from the visual representation in the textbook have written text, ground, object and interpreteant. At the same time, the sign used to build the meaning behind of the image found in the textbook. Besides, from the eight types of images based on the theory adopted from Wright (1989), it is found only five types of images in the textbook. Those are images of several people (6 images), the image of people in action (5 images), the image of a single object (3 images), the image of one person (3 images), and the image of famous people (1 image). While the image of charts, news, fantasy, from history, a lot of information, sequences, related image, single simulating, maps and symbol, pairs, image and text, ambiguous, bizarre, explanatory, and students and teacher drawing was not found in the textbook, because the image criteria are closer to types of image criteria that have been classified. In connection to the messages conveyed by the images, it is found that the images in the textbook were not only an image, but all the images had a relationship with the contents of the textbook.
