Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to find out the teachers‟ strategies in teaching students with special needs especially students with hearing impairment. This study was conducted on three English teachers who teach in an inclusive class at SMKN 5 MATARAM. This research uses the ethnography design by describing, analyzing, and interpreting a culture-sharing group‟s shared patterns of behavior, beliefs, and language that develop over time. Data were collected using interviews and observations. Then for analyzing the data, researcher used method by marshall and Rossman. These phases are : (1) organizing the data, (2) generating caregorizes and themes, (3) testing emergent understanding, (4) searching for an alternative explanation, and the last (5) writing the report.. After analyzing the data it was found that there were several supporting and inhibiting factors in teaching students with special needs. There were supporting factors, namely parents who provide support, and the school has facilitates several programs that support students with special needs in the learning process. Then, the inhibiting factors were students who have difficulty in understanding learning because student has difficulty in hearing, teachers who have difficulty in teaching by use sign language. In addition, the teachers applied strategies in teaching students with special needs, the three English teachers used gesture (body language) and sign language.
