Abstract

This study aims to identify the kinds of students‟ difficulties and the dominant factor that contribute to the students‟ difficulties in speaking English of the second grade students of Mts Putri NW Narmada. There were 70 students taken as the sample of this study. In selecting the sample, simple random sampling technique was used. To analyze the data, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. Observation and questionnaire were used in a method of the data collection. There are two types of findings in this research. The first one is concerned with the difficulties faced by the students in speaking English that comes from the internal and external factors. The result of each factors were: 1) fear of making mistakes was chosen by 60 respondents, 2) lack of confidence was chosen by 66 respondents, 3) shyness was chosen by 64 respondents, 4) anxiety was chosen by 51 respondents, 5) lack of motivation was chosen by 23 respondents, 6) lack of knowledge was chosen by 90 respondents, 7) teaching and learning process was chosen by 54 respondents, 8) teacher‟s feedback was chosen by 39 respondents and 9) classroom environment was chosen by 54 respondents. The second finding was related to the dominant factor that contributed to the students‟ difficulties, that was lack of knowledge was chosen by 90 respondents.
