Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the data of code-switching used by an English teacher of senior high school grade eleven during the teaching and learning process in the classroom. Specifically, it focuses on the types and functions of code-switching. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data taken from the English teacher’s utterances by using three steps: recording, observing, and taking notes. The result shows 95 data of code-switching uttered by the teacher. From those data, Intersentential switching is the most frequently used code-switching type with 63 data, followed by intra-sentential switching with 31 data, and one datum of tag switching, which makes it become the lowest type found. Furthermore, in terms of function, 41 data is used as reiteration, followed by addressee specification with 18 data, message qualification, and personalization versus objectification with 14 cases for both and quotation with 8 Data. Interestingly, the code-switching used as interjection wasn't found in the data. The use of the inter-sentential switching type reveals the fact that the teacher use code-switching for giving clear information or instruction for the students in order to make sure that the students understand the material taught.
