Abstract

The concern of this study is the mentality and needs fulfillment of the main character, Mark Watney in The Martian movie. The aims of this study, firstly to find out and analyze the way Mark Watney's mentality is depicted in the movie after he was stranded on Mars. Second, to encounter his needs in survival as expressed by Abraham Maslow (1970) about the theory of hierarchy of needs. The data source of this research was the movie The Martian and its script released in 2015. The data were collected by document analysis and analyzed using Maslow's theory of needs (1970). The results of the mentality analysis of the main characters after being stranded on Mars are optimistic, resourceful, hardworking, patient, and self-reliant. Furthermore, the main character can fulfill all the needs conveyed by Abraham Maslow. The theory of needs includes physiological needs, safety needs, love and belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. He fulfilled his physiological needs because he has an adequate supply of food and water, an oxygen generator to produce oxygen, and a Hab as a shelter. The need for security can be encountered because Mark takes refuge in the Hab and rides a rover on his journey on Mars. Mark fulfilled the needs for love & belongingness when he gets a Pathfinder and communicates with people on earth. The fulfillment of esteem needs can be seen when Mark grows potatoes so that he claims to be the greatest botanist on Mars. Therefore, Mark Watney achieved selfactualization because he used all the abilities he had when surviving on Mars.
