Abstract

The objectives of this research are: 1) to identify and describe the use of lexical cohesion items in John Cheever's short story The Five Forty-Eight and; 2) to explain how lexical cohesion items contribute to building up coherence of language expression in the short story. This study focuses on the lexical cohesion items introduced and developed by Halliday and Hasan (1976), they are repetition, synonym, superordinate, general word, and collocation. Then the data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative method, and the data sources are The Five Forty-Eight story text. The documentation study method was used to collect the data from the short story. The results show that all the items of lexical cohesion were found in the story, they are repetition (58.8%), synonym (7.4%), superordinate (5.5%), general word (17.1%), and collocation (11.1%). This study finds out that repetition, general words and collocation are the most frequent items used in the short story. Meanwhile superordinate is the first lowest data and synonym is the second.
