Abstract
The study aims: 1) to describe the students’ actual problems in English oral communication or speaking at senior high school SMAN 1 Masbagik, and 2) to describe the teachers’ strategies in promoting English oral communication or speaking in the senior high school SMAN 1 Masbagik. The research method in this study was qualitative research with a case study design. The participants in this study were from the eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Masbagik. To collect the data, the researcher used three types of instruments: observation sheet, interview and questionnaires. In this research, the data analysis technique employed by the researcher is a qualitative analysis. The findings of this study showed that the most common problems faced by eleventh-grade students in learning English speaking at SMAN 1 Masbagik include lack of Vocabulary, difficulty in using Grammar, difficulty in using Pronunciation, and Inhibition. To assist eleventh-grade students in minimizing problems in learning English speaking, and help students improve their English speaking skills in the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Masbagik, the teachers use several strategies to teach. Those strategies including Discussion, Questions & Answers practice, Conversation practice, and Role-play.
