Abstract

This study aims to 1) describe the translation methods and 2) identify the frequently used translation method by students in translating English pedagogic text. Translation method theory stated by Newmark (1988) was used in conducting this study. The texts used in this study are The Legend of Malin Kundang, BJ Habibie, and Cut Nyak Dhien taken from English textbook for X grade Senior High School curriculum 2013. The method applied in this study is qualitative descriptive. The participants of this study consist of 20-5th-semester students English Department University of Mataram. The instrument of this study was a translation test. From 1.017 collected data, it is shown that only six of eight methods were used to translate English pedagogic text. Those are literal translation method consist of 192 data with a percentage 18.88%, faithful translation method consist of 404 data with a percentage 39.53%, semantic translation method consist of 3 data with a percentage 0.29%, free translation method consist of 131 data with a percentage 12.88%, adaptation translation method consist of 6 data with a percentage 0.59% and communicative translation method consist of 276 data with a percentage 27.14%. It can be concluded that the most frequently used method is faithful translation method.
