Abstract
This study aims to identify the type of category shift that occurs in the translation of the novel Perahu Kertas from Indonesian-English version. This study also aims to identify the dominant type of category shift used by translators in translating the novel Perahu Kertas. This research is a type of qualitative research with analytical method. The data source of this research is the contents of the novel Perahu Kertas with Indonesian-English translation chapters 1 to 23. The identified shift of categories constitutes structure shift, class shift, unit shift and intra-system shift. The data that has been collected is identified and then classified into each type of category shifts. This study found that there are four types of category shifts, namely structure shift, class shift, unit shift and intra-system shift. The category shift with the highest frequency is the structure shift with 744 cases from 1328 data. The unit shift is in second place with 376 cases. In the third place there is a intra-system shift with a total of 160 cases. Class shift was the category shift with the least number of cases with 48 cases.
