Abstract

Freedom Writers movie illustrates the current status of education and learning, as well as the difficulties that teachers and students face and how they are addressed. The researcher used the film as the research object since it has some teaching and learning strategies depicted in the film that can be considered as important findings for the research. This study aims to (1) find out the teaching techniques used by the female teacher character of the movie, and (2) to measure the effectiveness of teaching techniques used by the female teacher character of the movie in relation to the student learning process. Data were collected from the scenes and dialogues in the movie. Results show that there are 5 types of teaching techniques presented in the movie that included: Authentic Material (33%), Paragraph Writing (33%), Creative Adaptation (11%), Transformational Drill (11%), and Reading Aloud (11%). The effectiveness of the teaching techniques is measured by the number of students who gave positive and negative responses towards the teaching techniques used by the female teacher character in the movie. Results show that there are 4 teaching techniques that are effective in improving student learning process, those are Using Authentic Material, Paragraph Writing, Creative Adaptation, and Reading Aloud. Meanwhile, Transformational Drill is not effective because only 3.6% (1 out of 28 students) gave positive response to the teacher’s use of the teaching technique.
