Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the Indonesian government through the Ministry of Education and Culture to implement a policy of moving conventional learning to distance learning. The study aims to investigate how the practice of English language teaching during distance learning, the challenges faced by teachers and students and the solutions made in overcoming these obstacles. The study was qualitative research in the form of a case study design. Data collection techniques used in-depth interviews with two English teachers and 30 students.The data analysis technique in this study consists of three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. Evidently, various efforts have been made by teachers in simplifying teaching and learning activities. A variety of apps and platforms are employed. Some obstacles were also found by teachers and students when learning took place. Tehcnical support related to technology were the most common obstacles faced by participants. Training on the use of technology and provide learning facilities can be solution in dealing with the obstacles of distance learning during the pandemic.
