Abstract

This study aims to identify, describe, and analyze the types of speech acts uttered by the main characters in the Maleficent (2014) movie as well as to find out the most dominant types of speech acts used in Locutionary Act, Illocutionary Act, and Perlocutionary Act. Two research questions were proposed in the present study that included: (1) What are the types of speech acts found in the main characters’ dialogues in the Maleficent movie, and (2) What are the most dominant types of speech acts used in the dialogues by the main characters in the Maleficent movie. To answer both questions, the theories of speech acts proposed by Austin (1962) and Searle (1985) were used. Data source were collected from the dialogues performed by the main characters. They were then analyzed using qualitative descriptive method. The collected data showed that the movie script contained 4.770 words, 449 sentences, and 96 utterances with 88 uttered dialogues and 8 uttered monologues. All the 89 utterances were taken as the analzyed data, while 8 others were sorted out since they were in the form of monologues, not dialogues. Results show that: the locutionary act consists of declaration (62 utterances, 69.7%), interrogatives (14 utterances, 15.7%), and imperatives (13 utterances, 14.6%). The illocutionary act consists of representatives (40 utterances, 54.8%), directives (19 utterances, 26%), expressives (9 utterances, 12.3%), declaratives (3 utterances, 4.1%), and commissives (2 utterances, 2.7%). The perlocutionary act consists of perlocutionary object (10 utterances, 62.5%) and perlocutionary sequel (6 utterances, 37.5%). In Locutonary Act type, the most dominant type of utterances is Declaration that comprises 69.7% of the total utterances. Meanwhile, interrogative (15.7%) and imperative (14.6%) are placed in 2nd and 3rd position, respectively. In Illocutionary Act type, the most dominant type of utterances is Representative with 54.8% of the total utterances. Meanwhile, Directive (26%), Expressive (12.3%), Declarative (4.1%), and Commissive (2.7%) are placed in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th positions, respectively. Finally, in Perlocutionary Act type, Perlocutionary object (62.5%) is more dominant compared to the Perlocutionary Sequel type (37.5%).
