Abstract

Sumbawa Island is one of the largest islands in the Province of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) with an area of 15,414.5 km2. Climatic conditions greatly affect the economy of the people of Sumbawa Island because most of the population make a living as farmers, planters, and ranchers. Extreme climate change is common. This results in natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and droughts. Sumbawa Island itself often experiences flooding in the rainy season and drought in the dry season. Knowledge of climate characteristics will greatly help the people there to overcome and avoid the effects of extreme climate change at present and in the future. The existence of this study serves to provide information related to climate characteristics on the island of Sumbawa. The method used in analyzing the climate characteristics of Sumbawa Island is the Thornthwaite and Schmidth-Fergusson climate classification method. The data used is secondary data for 14 years (2005–2018). The data was obtained from the NT I River Basin Center and the data by Thomas-Fiering for the next 10 years (2019–2028). The results of the analysis showed that, according to Thornthwaite, Sumbawa Island in the periods 2005–2018 and 2019–2028 had the same climate type, namely dry climate (E) based on the average PE index value of 16 and tropical climate (A) based on the average TE index value of 128. Meanwhile, according to SchmidthFergusson in the period 2005–2018 and 2019–2028, Sumbawa Island has the same 3 types of climate, namely a temperate climate (D) with a value of 0.6 Q 1, a rather dry climate (E) with a value of 1 Q 1.67 and a dry climate (F) with a value of 1.67 Q 3.
