Abstract
Abstract: Translation of foreign language texts into Indonesian is now being developed better in Indonesia. This is as evidenced by the use of translation in various works, including novel. This study aims to (1) identify the types of category shift on noun phrases occurring in “9 Summers 10 Autumns” novel based on Catford‟s theory of category shift, (2) identify and describe the accuracy of category shift on noun phrase based on Nababan‟s theory. This research used mixed methods research. The data for this study was the seven chapters containing the most category shifts on noun phrases in the novel. The researcher read the novel, analyzed and identified category shift and accuracy occurring in the novel. The findings shows that 235 data of category shift were found in the novel. All types of category shifts were applied in the novel 9 Summers 10 Autumns. The most frequently shifts that occurred were structure shift with 132 data or 56.17 % of all the data. Followed by Unit shift consisted of 65 data or 27.65%. Intra-system shift consisted of 27 data or 12.48%. The fewest type of shift that occurred were class shift consisted of 14 data or 4.68%. Meanwhile, regarding to the translation accuracy, there were 166 sentence data of category shift that were found. From those data, all levels of accuracy were found in the translation. Those are, accuracy consisted of 97 data or 58.43%, less accurate consisted of 58 data or 34.93%, and inaccurate level consisted of 11 data or 6.62%. Based on the results of this study, this novel contains all types of category shifts. Structure shift being the most frequently shift that occurred while class shift appeared in the fewest number. Based on the accuracy level of all those category shifts, this novel is considered accurate.
