Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze how cultural content is represented in English textbooks. The instrument used in this research is the document analysis method, namely English textbooks. To reveal how culture is described in English textbooks, cultural content can be categorized into source culture, target culture, and international culture with the theory of Cortazzi and Jin (1999), and neutral culture proposed by Aliakbari (2004). This study uses a qualitative method. Data were collected from textbooks and analyzed for cultural content by reading the entire book and listing any readings, pictures and cultural activities. Based on the calculation results, it is known that the target culture is found in textbooks with a percentage of 56.1%, the source culture with a percentage of 26.3%, international culture with a percentage of 12.3%, and neutral culture with a percentage of 5.3%.
