Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of The Students’ Ability in Using Simple Present Tenses on The First Grade Students in Academic Year 2015/2016 of MTs Ma’rif Jam’iyatul Islamiyah Dasan Baru” aiming at investigating the students’ ability and revealing their difficulties in using simple present tenses. The data of this research were collected through tests and questionnaire. The population in this research was the first grade students of MTs Ma’rif Jam’iyatul Islamiyah Dasan Baru in academic year 2015/2016, in which 27 of them were used as sample. Finding shows that the mean score of the students’ ability was 28.22. There was only 1 student (4%) got the fairly good score in range 40-55. However, the other 26 students (96%) got the fail score in range 0 - 39. It means that the students got very low qualification. Furthermore, it is indicated that the first grade students of MTs Ma’rif Jam’iyatul Islamiyah Dasan Baru found difficulties in using simple present tense. The difficulties faced by the students are identified by using the students’ incorrect answers in multiple choice tests and questionnaire. Therefore, it can be inferred that the majority of the students has very low understanding in simple present tense.
