Abstract

This study is a descriptive study of the registers found in the spoken utterance of lecturers while teaching and learning in class at the English study program, Mataram University. The type of research is descriptive qualitative. The objective of this study aimed to determine the types of language styles and the reasons for using registers when teaching in class. The researcher observed and collected the data by entering the online class. After gaining the data, the researcher transcribed it into written data. The researcher then classified the data based on the register type and analyzed the reason why the register was used using Halliday's theory. Three types of language styles were found from some of the data studied; Formal style, Consultative style, and Casual style. Of the three types above, formal style is more often used by lecturers in class (41.18%), followed by casual style (38.82%), and consultative style as the least used language style (20%). Moreover, lecturers are using this register in teaching and learning activities in the classroom because using the appropriate register in learning activities can make their communication effective and efficient.
