Abstract

E1D 012 076 The writer aims to find out difficulties and causes in listening short conversations faced by the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Mataram academic year of 2016/2017. This research takes qualitative study in form of a case study as the method of research. This research is conducted at SMPN 5 Mataram. The population of this study is 352 students of the eighth grade and the sample is class VIII A consists of 39 students. The sample is chosen based on cluster random sampling technique. The data are collected through listening short conversations test, questionnaire, and interview. The data are quantitative and qualitative. The result of the listening test shows 2.56% of students get “satiesfied”, 7.7% “poor” and 89.74% “Very Poor”. The data indicates students’ listening proficiency are very low. Based on qualitative data, the questionnaire states some difficulties in listening short conversations such as unfamiliar words and topics, difficult to remember the words or phrases, difficult in listening without transcript, unable to understand speakers’ accents and pronunciations, unrepeated recorded text, unable to concentrate, and fear in doing listening. Besides, the interview shows the causes of students’ difficulties in listening short conversations such as the listening recorded materials from native speaker were rarely being learnt, students’ hearing problem, lack of listening exercises, teacher’s teaching method is only dictation, lack of listening to native speakers experiences, students’ dislike on English, lack of preparation, noisy environment, hot weather, and back sits.
