Abstract
The aims of this study are 1) to identify Gandalf characterization in J. R. R. Tolkien’s movie series entitled The Lord of The Rings by using a theory in analyzing characterization proposed by Minderop (2005) and 2) to describes the social empathy from Gandalf characterization by using a theory from Segal (2011) that arranges a model of social empathy. By considering this model of social empathy, the writer found that some of characterization of Gandalf in accordance with this theory such as wise, care, compassionate, and brave. Those four characters are relevant with three main points in social empathy namely empathy, contextual understanding, and social responsibility (Segal, 2011). However, this research applied descriptive qualitative in which the researcher collected the data from picture and dialogue in the film.
