Abstract
Abstract: This study aims: 1) to identify and describe affixes used in derivational process in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone novel, and 2) to identify and describe the grammatical functions of the affixes. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The primary data in this study is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone novel and the secondary data is from journals, books, theses and dictionary. To collect the data, the researcher used 3 techniques: browsing, downloading and note taking. The result of this study shows that affixes used in derivational are prefix and suffix. There are 8 prefixes found, such as dis- an-, a-, en-, al-, uni-, extra-, in- and trans- and 22 suffixes found such as, -ly, -ous, -or, -y, -ful, -o, -ed, -er, -ent, -tion/-ion, -man, -ness, -ing, -ment, -ible, -less, -ance, -al, -able, -ive, -ship, and -ter. The grammatical functions of affixes are noun formation which changes verb into noun, adjective into noun and noun into noun; verb formation which changes verb to verb; adjective formation which changes verb into adjective and noun adjective; and adverb formation which changes adjective into adverb and verb into adverb.
