Abstract

This study discusses the identification and description of the proportion of lexical density (LD) compared with grammatical intricacy (GI) and the investigation of the linguistics features used dominantly in the thesis abstract written by students of the postgraduate English department of the University of Mataram. This study was approached by the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) model. Additionally, those objectives are accounted for proportion patterns proposed by Halliday (1985) and Eggins (2004) respectively. This study applies descriptive qualitative research and library research. The data were taken by documentation method and selected using nonprobability sampling techniques in the form of purposive sampling. The findings show that the ratios of LD and GI in the 21 thesis abstracts were varied. The lowest lexical density is 4.94. The medium lexical density with a ratio of 6.35 and the highest lexical density is 9.0. More than half of the thesis abstracts (16 of 21) are low and medium dense, which is range between 4.94-6.93 ratios. Then, the others are highly dense and range between 7.03-9.0 ratios. Furthermore, the lowest grammatical intricacy is 1.4. The medium grammatical intricacy with a ratio of 1.9 and the highest lexical density is 3.5. Almost all of the thesis abstracts (19 of 21) are low and medium dense, which is range between 1.4-2.7 ratios. Then, the others two are in high density, which ranges between 3.1-3.5 ratios. The average score of LD and GI is at 6.48 and 2.1 ratios. It indicates that the proportion of LD is higher than GI because of the high lexical items covered in the students’ abstracts. This means the abstracts have good quality in terms of their content and information, which can be accessible and clear to comprehend. Then, the dominant lexical items used in the abstract were nouns since a noun is a significant part of delivering explicit information and idea about the research. Moreover, if the text has a higher lexical density, more information is provided. Conversely, if the text has low lexical density, the text is intricate to understand.
