Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the factors causing speaking difficulties and the most influential factor causing speaking difficulties in learning English. This study was conducted at SMAN 01 Jereweh and the population were eleventh grade students. The samples were 30 students from XI IPA 1 class. The method used in this study was qualitative research with descriptive analysis. The data collection was done by using observation and questionnaire. The result from this study shows that there were four factors causing speaking difficulties faced by students in learning English namely inhibitions factor with mean score 18,20, nothing to say factor with mean score 18,66, low or uneven participation factor with mean score 15,50, and mother tongue factor with mean score 16,76. In conclusion, the most dominant factor that caused students to have difficulty in learning speaking was the nothing to say factor as many as 18.66 mean score of students experienced it.
