Abstract

This thesis entitled “Deixis of The Novel “The Goose Girl” by Shannon Hale and Its Translation Into Indonesian”. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of deixis in the novel and the equivalence of deixis word into Indonesian by the main character. The method of this study was a description qualitative. The focus of the data in this study was the words of the utterances that contain deixis in English and their translation into Indonesian. Documentation and observation methods were used to collect the data. The observation involves some steps, namely observing, identifying, classifying, and evaluating. There were three instruments that this study used to collect the data; they were observing instrument, identification instrument and classification instrument. The result of the study shows that deixis words were used in Shannon Hale’s novel entitled The Goose Girl and it has five types of deixis. They were person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis. But the most type of deixis that was used by the main character is person deixis. The equivalence of person deixis can be achieved by involving the familiar/non familiar dimension from source language into the target language. The equivalence of time deixis can be achieved through translating from source language into target language by giving adverbial of times. The equivalence of social deixis can be achived through translating the words into social stratification to show the status social of the main character. The analysis of place deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis showed that every word in the sentence of target language was translated into equivalent concepts in the target language to give accurate of meaning. But it was not possible there were mistake translate by translator when they were translate the source language into target language. It is found that some words in the main character utterances were missing or were not translated.
