Abstract

This research entitled “Identifying Students’ Difficulties in Comprehending Narrative Text: A Case Study at The Ninth Grade Students of SMPN 2 Lingsar in Academic Years 2015-2016” the data were collected and analyzed from 71 students from 2 classes IX 1 and IX 3 by using descriptive method, the researcher focused on identifying students reading ability qualification in comprehending narrative text, identifying difficulties that faced by the students in comprehending narrative text and why it is difficult to comprehend by the students. In collecting the data researcher used three instruments; test, questionnaire and interview. From the test instrument researchers found that the students reading ability is in satisfied qualification based on the students mean score 58.4 and the most difficult types of difficulties related to the test items of narrative text that the students faced is in finding main idea. From questionnaire and interview instrument the students’ difficulties in comprehending narrative text caused by several factor such as; the students’ knowledge of vocabulary and language feature of narrative text and the students’ motivation in reading narrative text.
