Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the implementation of scientific approach through an online learning platform. The participants in this study were two English teachers who teach in grade 8 at a state public junior high school in Mataram. The two teachers teach in different classes, where Teacher 1 (TA) teaches grades 8-1 to 8-3, and Teacher 2 (TB) teaches grades 8-4 to 8-6. Methods of data collection were observation, interview and documentation. The data analysis used discourse analysis procedures which includes identifying, classifying, describing, and explaining. The results of this study indicate that the two teachers have carried out learning procedures which include activities from each stage of scientific approach but not have been optimal. In implementing the scientific approach through WhatsApp group, the two teachers faced several challenges at each stage. All challenges were related to the activeness of students in online learning. Both teachers have their own strategies in dealing with these challenges. All strategies taken by TA and TB were aimed at students, because students were the biggest challenges when implementing the scientific approach through WhatsApp group.
