Abstract

In writing thesis, discourse markers play significant role to create the writing being communicative, convincing, and structured. This study aims to 1) identify the types of discourse markers proposed by Fraser (1999) and 2) describe discourse markers error using Kao and Chen theory (2011) in 7 selected theses background written by undergraduate students of English education program at the University of Mataram with A and B+ score. Descriptive qualitative was applied in this study. Furthermore, the researcher described the data from the selected theses that had been collected according to the theory used. From the results of the analysis, it was found that the types of discourse markers obtained were elaborative, contrastive, and inferential. Meanwhile, the errors in using discourse markers were placed in three points among six points. Those are overuse, wrong relation, and distraction. Thus, all types of discourse markers proposed by Fraser (1999) in students’ thesis background were identified and the errors explained by Kai and Chen (2011) were not all found.
