Abstract

Abstract: This research aims at identifying and explaining the type and meaning of figurative language in Selena Gomez’s songs (Revival Album). The method employed in this research was qualitative descriptive. All data were collected, classified, and interpreted based on the theory of Perrin(1990). The data were taken from 10 songs by Selena Gomez. The selection of the data was based on the popularity of the songs. The result of the research showed that there are 26 figurative languages identified in the songs. They are similes ( 7), metaphors (7), hyperboles (5), personifications (4), paradox (1), symbol(1), and verbal irony (1). Metaphor and simile are the dominant types of figurative language identified in the songs. It also showed that there are three meanings of figurative language identified in the songs namely: comparison meaning which includes simile, metaphor, and personification ( 18 figurative languages), contradiction meaning which includes hyperbole, paradox, and verbal irony ( 7 figurative languages), and correlation meaning which includes symbol ( 1 figurative language).
