Abstract

This study aims to describe and explain the forms, functions, and meanings of idioms contained in Justin Bieber’s songs and its application to English vocabulary teaching. The data was taken from the latest album (justice), and four songs were used as a sample of the data. Those songs are off my face, unstable, die for you, love you different. The descriptive-qualitative method was utilized in this study. From the results of the data analysis, the idioms found in the whole songs were 19 idioms in the form of pure idiom, semi-idiom, and literal idiom. For the functions of idioms, they were categorized into three functions: ideational, interpersonal, and relational. However, in those songs, there were only ideational and interpersonal functions. Based on the meaning, the idiom in the songs can be classified into two types: compositional and noncompositional. The reason for using these songs as a medium for teaching vocabulary is that the idioms used are standard idioms that can be found in the idiom dictionary.
